Reading is FUNdamental!

The other day, I finished reading Beverly Cleary’s Ralph S. Mouse (link). Despite the book being well under my reading comprehension level, as my sister was sure to let me know, I was super excited to get the chance to read it again. It was one of my favorite books as a kid, and reading it again brought back a lot of memories.

This isn’t the first time recently that I’ve purchased and read through a book that I used to love, and it won’t be the last, either. I have another book on my list that I will get to eventually, and am always running across others that I think about buying. It’s nice to go back to that place and time for a little while, when the most important thing in the world was seeing how Ralph was going to fix his motorcycle. Sure beats stressing about the economy. (;

So I ask, what were your favorite books as a kid? Do you still have them? When was the last time you picked them up and read them?

    I used to love to borrow your book “Where the Sidewalk Ends” by Shel Silverstein. There’s something about a poem that involves being eaten by a boa constrictor that still makes me smile. (= I’m glad you enjoyed your book. Maybe some day I”ll borrow WSE again.

    Shel Silverstein is a children’s literary genius….I loved his books too….and Beverly Cleary’s “Ramona Quimby Age 8″ is STILL my favorite book and I still have the one my parents bought for me back in the 3rd grade…I was in love with that book and I can still remember my 3rd grade teacher reading it to us during our cool-down time after recess. Beverly Cleary books are great too!!!
    As to your final question…after the already mentioned book I was addicted to the Laura Ingalls Wilder series, the Babysitter’s Club series and the Goosebumps Series…and I still have ALL of my books from when I was a child and some of the more recent texts I have bought to use in my classroom. Children’s books really just take you back a bit and let you remember the good ole days of recess and little to no homework. (-:

    Yay! I love reading children’s books still. The Junie B. Jones series was a good one when I was young. Charlotte’s Web was also a favorite. I reread that a few years ago. There are some good quotes about friendship in there.
